Thermal Expansion Standard

- Polycrystalline Alumina, Al
2O3 -

Material:
The Standard material is polycrystalline Alumina with a purity higher than 99.5 %. A complete set of standards was prepared in one production process using one charge of raw materials. Therefore maximum possible reproducibility and homogeneity should be achieved.

Test Conditions:
The values presented in the standard table are the results of measurements on 15 different samples. Each sample was measured 5 times. Four Dilatometer systems, single pushrod and differential types, were employed for the tests. The measurements were carried out in the temperature range from -175 to 1650¡C. All systems employed for the test were temperature calibrated prior to the measurement runs. Measurements were performed under static (stepwise isothermal) and dynamic conditions. For calibration of the dilatometers the following primary standards were employed: sapphire SRM 732 from NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg) and fused silica K001.001 to K001.202 from PTB (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunschweig).

Application range:
The standards are allowed to be used in the temperature range between -200 and 1680¡C. The standards can be employed under inert and oxidizing conditions as well as under vacuum. Measurements in graphite sample holder systems at elevated temperatures are not recommended.

Accuracy:
The standard deviation reported are calculated from the standard deviations of the individual measurements on one sample as well as the scattering of the results for the different samples. Considering other sources of error (e.g. temperature measurement, accuracy of the primary standard) the standard deviations have to be multiplied by a factor of two to give the absolute accuracy of the secondary standard.
The accuracy is only valid for not contaminated samples, never exceed the above mentioned temperature range.

Availability:
The material can be used as a secondary standard for the calibration of dilatometers and thermomechanical analyzers. The standard is available in rods with diameters of 6 mm and length of 20, 25 and 50 mm.
